[Narvin first reaction is to be furious at Arthas for moving forward without telling him. What if something had gone wrong? What if--? But he quickly pushes that away as he listens to the rest of the conversation, because Drake obviously *didn't* attack Dracula, he didn't follow Arthas' commands.]
You...refused Arthas. You're confident in that decision, I hope?
[He speaks carefully, afraid that he might break something if he makes a misstep.]
You said you didn't want to hurt us because we've been nice. What about people you've never met? People you pass in the street who, at a different time might be audience members at your shows, or children who have your picture taped inside their school lockers? Or people who are just going about their business and innocently living life? Would they be acceptable collateral, those people who haven't been directly nice to you?
I...no, I don't really want to hurt them, either. To be honest, it kind of bothered me a bit even back when I was working for Horvath when he pointed out that the kids I was giving my autograph to would die if we succeeded.
And now you see that you don't have to. Even when someone you respect asks--whether it's Horvath or Arthas or anyone--if it goes against your wishes and values, you can refuse.
[Narvin's going to subtly glance at his warden item, hearts pounding. He wishes the damn thing came with a progress meter so he'd know if he's close, or on the right track.]
Yeah, and if they're a decent friend, they won't get mad. And if they're not...well, I don't need friends who want to use me.
[If there had been a progress meter, Narvin would have had a 99.9% before that comment. Now, however, the item really would confirm Narvin's progress, since Drake just tipped the scales into graduating.]
[Narvin is silent for a nanospan, stunned. He'd sometimes wondered if he was suitable as a warden, and had sometimes wondered if he was capable of graduating an inmate, even one as good-natured as Drake. He wants to yelp in joy, or maybe just grin. But that would be far too undignified. He can't entirely hide his smile, though, as he speaks.]
Congratulation, Drake. You've graduated.
Would you like to make the announcement or shall I?
